A Past Accessibility Advisor Makes a Dire Plea for Trauma-Responsive Practices for Survivors
If you have worked in a helping profession over the last few decades, you have likely heard someone describe their approach as "trauma-informed," but that term was rarely ever actually embodied, and it is already beyond obsolete!Ā š
This example may resonate more if Black, Indigenous, or racialized, but "trauma-informed" is much like in 2020 when many white folx expressed an interest in racial justice as they informed us of all the anti-racist books they bought, as if their being more informed about our oppression would result in any actual improvements for our communities of colour!Ā š¤”"
Especially if not Black, Indigenous, or racialized, you may not know that many customers did not even bother to go collect their anti-racist books, so IĀ doubt they read them, and further doubt they implemented anti-racist strategies!Ā š„¹
Similarly, I have barely seen trauma-informed approaches practiced by colleagues who use that term despite 15 years as a registered social worker, as those with privilege often find it easier to assume they know better since their strides without the trauma of oppression can obscure insight,Ā while heightening their perception of professional expertise,Ā but even that "informed" lens is useless if not operationalizing that understanding of trauma impacts by meeting folx where we are at, as bureaucracy and complacency tend to embody complicity with our hauntingly slow deaths as our quality of life decreases like a tickingĀ time bomb!š£"
I am not an authority on the experiences of all survivors, but after 15 years in such roles as Mental Health Therapist, Accessibility Advisor, etc,Ā (during which IĀ supported many traumaĀ survivors), as well as my own traumatic experiences of parental betrayals, workplace harassment, gender-based violence, etc, I unequivocally know those harrowing violations just manage toĀ kill us slowly.
Admittedly, IĀ 1st explored this concept when IĀ titled my anthology essay, "A Slow Death in Academia" in 2020, but since being constructively dismissed from a theoretically permanent fulltime job, IĀ have painstakingly learned that aĀ slow death also awaits me when financially abused for 6.5 years to the tune of $183,364+, especially when navigating Migraine Disorder,Ā PMOS/PCOS, etc.Ā
ParticularlyĀ if you are a fellow survivor with minimal quality of life in the midst of debilitating trauma, IĀ can only assume that the last while has been rough with the Cornell 57 rape fuckery, as those of us who are also navigating housing precarity,Ā foodĀ insecurity, etc, have kept passing the same $10-50 amongst one another as we try to hold space for both ourselves and our loved ones!š
If we are serious about dismantling patriarchy and rape culture, we would stop calling it Cornell 7. It's the Cornell 57. Passive bystanders are a pillar of misogyny. Men must actively intervene in shifting social norms & refuse to participate in rape *culture* Its the Cornell 57, not Cornell 7.

Until being harassed by that white supremacist Executive Director of the family health team, loved ones and IĀ would joke about how those who mistreated me must not know that IĀ survived Ava, as a measure of how IĀ was equipped to survive anything! In 2016, my toxic "mother" would be replaced with the name of that bigoted boss! ByĀ 2024, that colonizerĀ would be replaced with the name of my abusive ex! Unfortunately, with each traumatic experience, my ability to keep going is depleted. As IĀ get increasingly closer to losing the condo unit IĀ have calledĀ home since 2018 after 3 missed mortgage payments, which has reduced my migraine-free hours to only a handful a week, part of me hopes this exacerbation of painĀ would be indicative of some acute condition that would extinguish my life swiftly!š¤š¾"
It is why IĀ now send emails like this to the collections staff for my mortgage:Ā
Unfortunately, IĀ receive prompt ableist email replies like this, which demoralize me, given how clearly IĀ articulated my access needs when IĀ communicated with this financial institution that performativelyĀ claims to want to assist me:Ā
When these decadesĀ have traumatized the fuck out of me whileĀ ripping those rewards the myth ofĀ meritocracy deceitfully offered forĀ an ethical, hard-working existence, my commitment to honouring my access needs will need to be pried from my cold, dead hands, as decades of trauma taught me that further violations usually followĀ refusals to accommodate our access needs, and if IĀ find life only barely worth living now, the last thing IĀ need is more trauma that fails to kill me expeditiously!š„"
With what could easily be my final newsletter post given how housing precarity limits my ability to affordĀ pain management, which reduces my quality of life, IĀ must highlightĀ that accessible care will require trauma-responsive approaches, so if your firstborn daughter knows herself in the aftermath of your betrayals well enough to grasp that she is unable to call the 1st person who made her feel unsafe, then you should respond by honouring her access needs, especially since you were the 1st to ever violate her!š„¹
Disability Justice activists, organizers, and cultural workers understand that able-bodied supremacy has been formed in relation to other systems of domination and exploitation. The histories of white supremacy and ableism are inextricably entwined, both forged in the crucible of colonial conquest and capitalist domination. One cannot look at the history of US slavery, the stealing of indigenous lands, and US imperialism without seeing the way that white supremacy leverages ableism to create a subjugated āotherā that is deemed less worthy/abled/smart/capable. A single-issue civil rights framework is not enough to comprehend the full extent of ableism and how it operates in society. We cannot comprehend ableism without grasping its interrelations with heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, colonialism and capitalism. Each system benefits from extracting profits and status from the subjugated āother.ā 500+ years of violence against black and brown communities includes 500+ years of bodies and minds deemed ādangerousā by being non-normative ā again, not simply within able-bodied normativity, but within the violence of heteronormativity, white supremacy, and gender normativity, within which our various bodies and multiple communities have been deemed ādeviant,ā āunproductive,ā and āinvalid.ā
If you are new(er) to thinking critically about access needs, you may benefit from reviewing my Access Hostility Bingo artwork from 2023, which outlines how access hostility may manifest, based on the experiences of disabled folx:
Especially if you have read my last newsletter post from a couple of weeks ago, I regret to inform you that I have now missed 3 mortgage payments of $1775.89 each (which is the closest I have come to becoming unhoused since 1st losing the place IĀ once called home in 2007 following a car crash that resulted in a broken wrist, sprained ankle, and soft tissue injuries that make pain my daily reality).Ā It has now been 13 weeks since chiropractic care, and 8 weeks since last taking the medsĀ that help to manage PMOS/PCOS, with incessantĀ calls regarding missed payments, so I remainĀ grateful to any folxĀ who have contributed funds as mutual aid to help me survive this ordeal.Ā
This is not the 1st time I have been hounded by creditors, but when this last happened in 2010, I was graduating with a Master's of Social Work degree despite how being listed as secondary on Ava's credit cards had disqualified me from government student loans and forced me to incur extensive credit card debt, with high hopes for a lengthy career making a difference supporting folx, without realizing how my commitment toĀ anti-oppressive practice was expected to end beforeĀ opposing white supremacy, settler-colonialism, ableism, xenophobia, etc!Ā š"
In stark contrast to then, I am the most traumatized disabled version of myself following GBV, white supremacist workplace trauma, etc. ItĀ is the only reason I reached out to Ava in 2025 for $10K, although she wasĀ my original character assassin, whoĀ lied toĀ me, and then lied on me, repeatedly. She responded by threatening my friend, and insisting that a phoneĀ call was required. Instead, IĀ exhausted my retirement savings while trying and failingĀ to find paid work for the last year, so her 2007 wishes for me to suffer are all coming into fruition.Ā
As I desperately attemptĀ to scrounge together $5417.67 by October 15, 2026, before another $1775.89 is due onĀ November 1, 2026, despite exhausting my retirement savings after suffering $183,364+ in financial abuse, if you are able to support me in staying alive by remaining housed, I would be grateful for any monetary contributions!šš¾"
If you would be willing to put my monthly website payment of $16CAD on your credit card to keepĀ my warnings about the ex who drained me of $183,364+Ā active in the event of my death as macro-level harm reduction in terms of community safety without carcerality, pleaseĀ email me atĀ krystal@equitableforall.com at your earliest possible convenience!š„¹
If able to contribute to my survival following my ex's financial abuse of at least $183,364, which further disabled me, alongside white supremacist workplace trauma, e-transfers within "Canada" may be sent to krystaljagoo@gmail.com and funds may be sent via PayPal below, so please support me if able, as I am desperately close to being unhoused!šš¾
